Program Review: Back to school

Since this is only my 2nd week back after a 5 week break for health issues, I really wanted to do something fun. All the primary kids are headed back to school next week, and I thought it would be fun to play a Primary program review game that went along with that milestone.

There are many variations of this activity all over online. I borrowed a few ideas, added in my own, and revised it to work for my primary. I am making this a 2 week activity as we won't be able to get through all 8 songs in one week. We will do 4 program songs and 1 fun song each week.

This Sunday, August 25th, will be our 1st week. The base of this revision came from a version of these ideas posted on Sugardoodle by Erika Soelberg, and Melanie on The Crazy Chorister.

Prep:

1 Backpack

A cup with enough pencils for each child to have one. Put a  sticker on 10 of them.

8-10 folders with different subjects listed on the front of the folder....and the song and activity listed on a paper on the inside of the folder.

Any other props that are needed for the activities that go with the songs.

Subjects: (These are the 5 subjects I will be doing this week Aug. 25th)

Biology: "My Heavenly Father Loves Me"-- Have the folder filled with different picture clues such as a bird, blue sky, rain, wind...etc. Have the child try and guess the song from the pictures. When they have guessed correctly, sing the song together. (Items needed for this: Picture helps)

Reading: "The Golden Plates" -- Call 2 kids up and have them sit in 2 chairs in front of the table. Put a bell on the table in between them, and hand each of them a Book of Mormon.
The primary sings the 1st verse of the song, while the 2 children will race to see who can find the book of Mormon, and ring the bell before the verse is finished. Then the primary will sing the 2nd verse while the 2 children race to find the book of 4th Nephi before the verse is up. (Items needed for this: 2 book of Mormons, and a bell)

Math: "When I am baptized"-- Count on your hands how many times we sing the word "I" in this song. (Answer: 10)

Language Class: "A child's Prayer"-- Line 5 chairs up in the front of the room. Call 5 helpers up and ask them to sit on the chairs. Ask the first child in the row to whisper their favorite primary song the the child next to them. While the primary sings the song, have them continue playing the telephone game. After the song is finished ask the last child what the 1st child's favorite song was.

Art: "I love to see the Temple"-- Call 1 child up and allow them to see the title of the song.  Give them 1 minute to draw a picture on the chalkboard that will help the primary guess the title. When the correct answer has been given, sing the song. (Items needed: Chalk and eraser)

Presentation:

Explain that this time of year is always fun because you get to start a new school year. Well, we are getting ready to start a new Program and we need to review:) Hand out the pencil cup and have the children pick a pencil. Tell the children to check their pencils for a star. (I didn't have stars so I used pink hearts and put them on the bottom of the pencil, but gold stars would blend in better to the yellow pencil.) The children with the stickers on their pencils will be "Teachers helpers". They will come to the front of the room and pick a subject folder out of your backpack. Then, you choose helpers out of the primary to come and do the activity for that folder.

I will post the 5 subjects for next weeks (September 1st) Early next week. Just make sure that you write down the names of the other 5 kids that were "Teachers helpers" that didn't get a turn this week. Because they will be the 5 for next weeks subjects.

I am so excited to do this.

Good luck, let me know how this goes in your primary:)

Here are some of the pictures I took of the things I am using:
I got the folders at Walmart for $0.50ea. I got 3 boxes of 20 pencils from Walmart for $0.97ea. I just used whatever stickers I had, and borrowed my daughters old backpack. I got the bell out of one of my board games.

Here is a close up of the bottom of the pencils so you can see I put the pink heart stickers at the bottom and then mixed them with the others and put them in a cup so the kids couldn't see which had a sticker and which didn't.

This is the folder for the Biology activity. These are the picture helps to help them guess the song.
